Chapter 346: Malicious Intent
Chapter 346: Malicious Intent
Leo Wright lowered his head and said nothing. A smirk played on Susan Caldwell’s lips. "I heard there’s been a major crackdown on drug traffickers around Yulara lately," she mused. "What do you think? Say an investigator shows up, and it just so happens that woman is a drug lord’s mistress. Wouldn’t that be an interesting little scenario?"
Leo Wright was slightly taken aback. He was formerly with a security company, and at his core, he was an upright man. He disapproved of Susan Caldwell using her father’s influence to mobilize government departments for her own selfish ends.
But he had been by her side for years, and in that time, he had developed secret feelings for her he was ashamed to admit. He couldn’t bear to see her unhappy or sad; he would do anything just to see her smile.
So, he said in a low voice, "If that’s the case, then that woman will likely rot in prison."
Susan Caldwell chuckled softly. "Perhaps this could even earn me some credit. When I go home, I can tell my dad that I went out on a trip and rid the public of a menace. He’ll surely be thrilled."
Her mood improved considerably at the thought of eliminating Vera Xavier—a woman who dared to defy her—and getting praised for it.
She had done plenty of similar things over the years, and by now, it was second nature.
Nathaniel Nathan was currently in a small town less than thirty kilometers from Trellis. A few days ago, he and his team had raided the drug lord’s main lair. They routed the three hundred mercenaries guarding it, killing or wounding most of them. They also confiscated a large quantity of drugs, with only a few of their own men sustaining minor injuries.
However, the drug lord himself was extremely vigilant. Realizing something was wrong, he immediately escaped through a pre-built secret tunnel.
The drug lord had taken the most potent drugs with him when he fled.
Nathaniel Nathan held nothing but contempt for these dregs of society who plagued the country. After going to so much trouble to track them down, he had no intention of letting them escape.
So he and his team had been in hot pursuit ever since. Along the way, they had eliminated several more mercenaries, but the drug lord was too cunning, managing to slip through his fingers multiple times. For Nathaniel, this was simply unacceptable.
He was currently planning their next move. The relentless pursuit had left his teammates exhausted.
Yet, not one of them complained. Their morale was high, and they were all determined to complete the mission and capture the drug lord.
After finalizing the operational plan, Nathaniel Nathan glanced toward Trellis, a faint smile touching his lips. He was reminded of Vera Xavier naively saying she wanted to go to Zartania for jade gambling. He could still picture her blank expression when he’d told her the real hotspots were in Yulara and Myrland.
’His wife really was a special kind of silly,’ he had thought at the time. ’Wanting to gamble on jade without even knowing where to go.’
’Now that he was almost at one of those places, she’d probably ask him to bring a rock back for her if she knew.’
He took her photo from his breast pocket and glanced at it, a new resolve hardening his gaze. He had to end this swiftly and get back to her.
’I wonder if she misses me when I’m not around?’
Shannon Quinn, covered in mud, ran over. "Captain, the drug lord is headed for Trellis!"
Nathaniel Nathan’s gaze grew cold. ’Those bastards,’ he thought. ’They’re really going to Trellis.’
He pulled out a map and unfolded it. Tracing their recent pursuit route, his eyes narrowed as he made an immediate assessment. "They’ve made a beeline for Trellis. I’m afraid they either have contacts there to meet them, or they have some hidden agenda."
