Chapter 345: Unreconciled
Chapter 345: Unreconciled
A dark look flickered in Susan Caldwell’s eyes. She said slowly, "I have a handle on this. You’re injured, so go back to your room and rest. With Irene sick with a cold and now you hurt, I’m just so worried."
Skylar Crowe immediately thought Susan was genuinely concerned for her, and some of her anger faded. She said softly, "I’ll go rest now. You don’t have to worry too much about me."
Susan Caldwell rummaged through her bag, pulled out a bottle of medicine, and handed it to her. "My dad gave me this before I left home. He said it works wonders on bruises and sprains. Here, use this!"
Skylar Crowe, completely won over by the bottle of medicine, was delighted. She reached out and hugged Susan Caldwell. "I knew you cared about me the most!"
Susan Caldwell smiled and nodded. The moment she turned away, the smile vanished from her face without a trace.
The second she was back in her room, she raised her hand and slapped Leo Wright across the face. "You useless piece of trash!" she cursed. "Aren’t you supposed to be an expert? You couldn’t even handle a single woman! Thanks to you, I was utterly humiliated today!"
Leo Wright took the slap, lowering his head slightly without a word.
Seeing his reaction, Susan Caldwell sighed. "It’s not that I want to hit you, but I was humiliated like that today, and you couldn’t even protect me. You’ve disappointed me so much. To think I went to such great lengths for you."
Leo Wright’s eyelashes fluttered. "Today was just an accident," he said quietly.
Susan Caldwell looked at him. He said in a low voice, "I don’t know why, but I got the feeling that woman knew my every move. Her technique wasn’t actually that remarkable, but she managed to preempt every attack I made. Most importantly, she seems to have an expert’s knowledge of the body’s pressure points. When she landed that one strike, half of my body went numb."
Susan Caldwell’s brow furrowed. "This is the first time we’ve ever met her. How could she possibly know you so well?"
"Or perhaps she’s one of your rivals," Leo Wright analyzed. "Today could have been a deliberate setup to humiliate you."
Susan Caldwell shook her head. "No, that’s not right. We’ve been traveling without a set plan. No one knows our exact itinerary."
As she spoke, her eyes narrowed slightly. "Although... the moment I first saw her today, she looked strangely familiar. It’s like I’ve seen her somewhere before, but I just can’t place it."
Leo Wright added quietly, "The man who helped her today was unusual, too. Judging by his clothes and his accent, he seemed to be from Marinus."
Susan Caldwell had noticed that as well. She asked Leo Wright, "Were those two bodyguards behind him really that skilled?"
Leo Wright nodded. "Either one of them is my equal in a fight."
Susan Caldwell was visibly shocked. She’d always considered Leo Wright to be incredibly skilled, but it seemed there was always someone better out there. Besides, this wasn’t Veridia. Even if she wanted to throw her weight around, it wouldn’t be nearly as effective here.
She frowned. "This is all that idiot Skylar’s fault for causing me so much trouble."
Leo Wright tried to reassure her. "You don’t need to worry too much, Miss. That woman and the man from Marinus probably aren’t working together. We don’t need to be afraid of just her."
"Who said I’m afraid of her!" Susan Caldwell huffed. "I just can’t stomach the humiliation. I’m going to teach that woman a lesson, that’s all."
It was in her nature to be the one taking advantage, never the one to suffer a loss. Even if she held her tongue and endured it for the moment, she would always find a way to get her revenge later, and she would make sure to crush her enemies completely.
