Chapter 132: A New Day, A New Venture!
Chapter 132: A New Day, A New Venture!
The new day was welcomed by the sun absent the day before, the blistering sun was a welcome sight but the heat that came with it was something that they could do without.
Jason woke up but he didn’t feel like doing much that day but he had something to do.
Jason was all dressed and ready for work, as he opened the door, he saw Glenn’s hand about to knock on it.
"Are you stalking me?" Jason asked and Glenn lowered his hand.
"Damn, you discovered my secret!" Glenn said theatrically.
Jason chuckled because they were slowly becoming friends as time passed.
"I know you didn’t come to tell me how much you missed me so what brings you here man?" Jason asked and Glenn looked giddy.
What he was about to tell Jason clearly excited him and Jason didn’t want to diminish that feeling.
"I have good news!" Glenn exclaimed and Jason wanted to hear him out.
"I’m going on my first raid! I was picked but that isn’t the best part, you’re coming with me!" Glenn muttered and Jason was more exhausted than he was excited.
He wanted to rest but he knew that this was a big step for him in terms of his influence in the community.
He knew that people would have their eyes on him as he now had a reputation.
"That’s great! How does it feel?" Jason asked, matching Glenn’s excitement.
But in actuality, he was unaffected by this, he didn’t care much about going on a raid, at least not now but he wanted to see how they operated and this was the perfect opportunity to do so.
Glenn nodded and he led Jason to a location where others gathered.
There was a car waiting for them but that wasn’t the thing that caught his attention.
It was the whispers and stares he got from those around him.
It was out of admiration and respect, Jason had crossed the most difficult hurdle in a day; that was gaining their trust.
"Welcome onboard," A dark-skinned man said with a grin, he had his hair styled in locs.
Jason could tell with one look that this was the man who was going to lead this venture.
Everyone was already in the car or it was more accurate to say truck.
Jason was surprised by the number of vehicles that he had seen so far since coming to this community.
He looked around and noticed that Clementine was absent, she was nowhere to be seen.
"They didn’t pick her to come?" Jason thought to himself as he jerked his head around to find her.
"Hey! Get in," Glenn said, Jason realizing that he had already entered the truck and was waiting for him to do the same.
Jason entered the car without any introduction, there were four others excluding Glenn and himself but he also noticed that there was another car behind them but it was much smaller.
"Do they usually go out in such large numbers?" Jason asked to which Glenn shook his head to deny this.
Jason didn’t like leaving this place without informing the others of his whereabouts because what if something happened to him, there wouldn’t be any way of them knowing.
"It looks like we’re also venturing into new territories. I knew if I was chosen it had to be for something big," Glenn bragged but Jason realized why they were chosen.
It meant one thing, they were running out of men because Glenn manned the walls until now.
This was the limitation of his strength or at least the limitation the men in this company had imposed on him.
They had to be desperate to deploy him in such a dangerous venture on his first try but Jason wondered why he was here.
He did perform a miracle with the retrieval of the bag so it was safe to presume that they wished to tap into some of that grace.
That took you long enough, a voice said from the front seat and Jason’s face creased into a smile.
"I see, they chose you too. Here I was, thinking I was special," Jason teased her but Clementine just smiled.
She knew what had to be done and something told her that wherever they were going, it was going to be dangerous.
She was in the military so she could pick up on certain body language having experienced so many similar situations.
The man that led them, she could tell from a glance that he was petrified of what was to come even though he kept his composure.
The smell of fear couldn’t be concealed, and Clementine smelled it on him.
"I know there are some new faces here today but I’m afraid we have no time for introductions; you can call me Franklin. We’re running short on supplies and we haven’t heard any word from the main company so we have to assume that they have wandered outside our range of communication..." Franklin paused as he took out a map that had multiple spot marks.
Clementine didn’t know him but he carried himself pretty well, she knew that Sam would relish in such a role, it was unfortunate that he chose to return to base so early.
Clementine wondered what happened to him, she hoped that everything was alright with him.
"I have marked the spots that have been raided, there is nothing anymore so we have to venture further out to find new hotspots so we can stock up. We don’t know if we will be able to survive the winter with our supplies..." Franklin said before pointing to the places marked with an ’O’.
"These are the spots we plan to raid, it is a little over twenty hours out west. We will assign you weapons and enough ammunition to last during this venture. We will be splitting with the vehicle behind us when we reach Orlando but we won’t be too far apart. We will rendezvous at dawn at the same location we split off from," Franklin said, this was no doubt a well-thought-out plan.
Clementine was impressed by how much thought he put into it but there were too many variables and a lot could go wrong.
What happens then? She knew that she could think quickly on the spot and already made up scenarios in her head if things did go south.
Clementine looked through the rearview mirror and she didn’t see any fear in Jason’s eyes.
This could be because he was oblivious to the dangers that awaited him on this mission.
-
Rachel wanted to see Jason that morning but she had to fight the urges as she didn’t want to bother him. Rachel didn’t know what their next plan was, she wasn’t aware of the venture that they were about to go on either.
Allison and Bella had already left the house to go about their job, Bella was feeling better and opted not to go to the hospital despite still healing from her wounds.
Bella had a muscular build so it was more durable than the average body and this meant it could take more damage.
This left Rachel alone with her sister, Lillian was taking it easy because the farm that she had opted to tend to didn’t have much going on.
They had planted the crops and it was close to harvest, it was too valuable to train her with so they planned to wait until after the harvest.
This specific role was not in demand and the majority of the people there applied for this very role so they had more than enough hands but this meant that they could expand gradually.
Rachel was already dreading her work but she was looking forward to her interaction with the man that flirted with her.
She wanted to see just what other pickup lines he had but this was only because there was nothing else to look forward to.
"Hey Rachel..." Lillian snapped her older sister back to reality.
"Are you good?" Rachel responded to which Lillian nodded to confirm this.
"You drifted away, are you worried about something?" Lillian asked but Rachel didn’t know if she could talk about boy problems with Lillian considering she has never had any experience herself and that was to be expected considering her age.
"Is it about Jason?" Lillian asked and Rachel was speechless for a moment.
"I know you’re wondering how I knew. Everyone knows." Lillian said.
Rachel realized that the little moments she was having with Jason weren’t as subtle as she thought but it wasn’t anything to worry about,
"It isn’t like that..." Rachel said with a scoff, trying her best to dismiss the claim.
"Are you sure? He looks at you the same way," Lillian said, trying to bait her sister into admitting she had feelings for Jason.
"He does? I will play along, how does he look at me?" Rachel tried to downplay it once again but she shouldn’t be interested in knowing if she had no interest in Jason.
People always gave Rachel sexual attention because of her looks so why was she interested in how Jason looked at her?
"I steal glances at you, he watches your lips when you talk..." Lillian said and Rachel couldn’t contain her grin but she quickly turned it into a yawn.
"I need to get to work. NOTHING is going on between Jason and I," Rachel said but Lillian had her answer. Everything she said was complete horseshit but her sister’s response told her everything she needed to know.
"She totally digs him..." Lillian thought to herself with a satisfied grin.
